Scholar Throwback – Joel Aitken
As we start collecting applications for this years Scholarship and Bursary Program we decided to take a look at past winners to see what they have been up to since they graduated.
This weeks Throwback Thursday Scholar is Joel Aitken.
What has your professional journey looked like since winning your GRAS scholarship?
“Since winning the GRAS scholarship I have developed a career in the fast growing and innovative organic food and certification sector in Canada, starting out as an organic farm inspector, then getting involved in the Organic Council of Ontario and now managing a nation wide team of inspectors.“
Do you have any personal highlights you would like to share?
“I live and work happily in downtown Guelph with my wife and daughter and am actively involved in the amazing local food and sustainability community in Wellington County.”
Do you have any ongoing connection to GRAS? What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?
“My family continues to be involved in the pizza perfect project hosted by GRAS each year.”
What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?
“Peace of mind and financial independence.”

If you know a student with a permanent residence in Wellington County, Perth County or the Region of Waterloo who is currently enrolled in a college or university with an agricultural or environmentally focused program they can apply for a scholarship of up to $2,500.
